Jamaican food feeds the souls of its people. Its fiery heat, rich sauces, and fresh produce speak to the spices that create the people in this “out of many” island.
KINGSTON KITCHEN is an artisan open-air food court and food market series that will be held every other month, and highlights the local culinary talents of Jamaica, as well as offers a wonderful family day out.
Artisan food markets are the future of dining, and it’s not just us who think so. According to the international food magazine Bon Appétit, these food markets are where you will find “the country’s next great dining scene…where inspired chefs and food artisans are changing the way we eat out.” This is exactly what we hope KINGSTON KITCHEN will be. In essence, the idea is to integrate local chefs, restaurateurs, food-makers, caterers, shoppers, foodies, and families in a culinary destination, creating an environment that shows Jamaicans that they can eat affordably, exciting, local and fresh.
So who are the ladies behind KINGSTON KITCHEN?
Jacqui Sinclair — More popularly known as “The Juicy Chef”, Jacqui is a Le Cordon Bleu-educated chef, who turned her energies to food styling and media in London, before returning to Jamaica five years ago. She currently has a weekly food column in The Jamaica Observer, and was a judge at this year’s Jamaica Observer Food Awards, (where she also won “Culinary Personality of the Year”). She hosts a food segment on Island Stylee (Caribbean Airlines’ in-flight programme), has a food show in the works as well as a book, and often hosts food journalists when they visit Jamaica.
Leisha Wong — As a journalist she wrote for The Jamaica Observer for two years before heading to SkyWritings magazine where she was the editor for two years. She is an avid foodie, has written about food, and has been involved in The Jamaica Observer Food Awards, since she moved to Jamaica five years ago, from London via Miami and New York. She was in fact a judge at the awards for the past two years. Before moving back to Jamaica she wrote for The New York Daily News, was associate editor at Florida International Magazine in Miami, and has recently written for MACO Caribbean and KUYA magazines.
Melanie Miller — Accomplished event designer and planner with over 12 years of experience in the industry, Melanie’s passion for design started with a degree in Interior Design. After studying in Atlanta, she moved to Florida and continued her studies at Florida International University. As a part of the FIU family, she became involved with the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, which became her home for seven years. Upon moving back to Jamaica, she fused her two passions, producing and styling events locally. Her portfolio includes project manager for The Jamaica Observer Food Awards for the past two years, numerous corporate events, private functions and a host of beautiful weddings.
